For a collaborative project between Janssen Pharmaceutica and the University of Leuven (KU Leuven), focusing on innovative gas chromatography methods for pharmaceutical analysis, the department of Analytical Development - Small Molecule Method Development (AD-SMMD) at Janssen Pharmaceutica and the division of Pharmaceutical Analysis at KU Leuven are seeking a highly motivated PhD candidate.
AD-SMMD is a dynamic team of scientists dedicated to developing, validating, and transferring analytical methods for Small Molecule drug characterization throughout the entire lifecycle, from early development to full product commercialization. AD-SMMD also serves as a Center of Excellence for chromatographic, physicochemical, and in-process control testing, implementing innovative analytical technology platforms for New Molecular Entities.
The Pharmaceutical Analysis research group, led by Prof. Deirdre Cabooter, focuses on the fundamental investigation of mass transfer phenomena in chromatography, the implementation of multidimensional liquid chromatography (LC) techniques combined with mass spectrometry (MS) for various research applications, and the development of automated method development strategies for complex samples.
This project aims to explore novel approaches and methodologies in gas chromatography (GC) for pharmaceutical analysis. Key objectives include investigating alternative detection techniques for GC, such as vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) spectroscopy for residual solvent and water analysis, and utilizing mass spectrometry with a high-efficiency source (HES) and cryogenic trapping system (CTS) for trace-level analysis in drug candidates, such as genotoxic impurities and nitrosamine precursors. Additionally, the project will develop a computer-organized screening and method optimization system for GC to automate method development for pharmaceutical samples. This tool aims to streamline the decision-making process in method development, reducing trial-and-error and the time required to establish robust and reliable GC methods for commercial release.
We offer a PhD position in a stimulating environment at Janssen Pharmaceutica in Beerse, Belgium. You will work in a renowned pharmaceutical company with a strong focus on R&D, in a well-equipped and internationally oriented research unit. Regular meetings and discussions (both online and in-person) will be organized with the academic promoter in Leuven, who will oversee the project from an academic perspective.
