Are you inspired by algorithmic and optimization-based approaches to real-world problems? Passionate about designing and implementing algorithms and investigating their practical performance? Join us to support the energy transition by addressing its design and planning challenges.
Position: PhD Student
Irène Curie Fellowship: No
Department(s): Mathematics and Computer Science
FTE: 1.0
Date: 15/09/2024
Reference number: V32.7706
As a PhD candidate, you will develop new models, algorithms, and systems to tackle the design and planning challenges of the energy transition. You will focus on combinatorial and geometric optimization (e.g., fitting solar panels, routing power distribution lines). While classical algorithms may solve simplified versions of these problems, they often lack realism for practical application. Your task will be to develop more practical solutions involving algorithm design, analysis, and engineering.
You will join the Algorithms (ALGO) cluster, which studies the design and analysis of algorithms and data structures, a core area within computer science. Our research ranges from curiosity-driven to application-motivated, and from purely theoretical to experimental. The goal is to understand the underlying principles of the developed solutions and to formally prove their properties. Our approaches frequently combine rigorous methods from algorithmic theory, providing performance guarantees for both solution quality and algorithm running time, with efficient engineering to achieve results of both theoretical and practical significance.
This PhD position is for 5 years, with 25% of your time dedicated to educational tasks.
You will work in a dynamic and ambitious university, in an interdisciplinary setting within an international network. Our beautiful, green campus is within walking distance of the central train station. We offer:
