The University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Southern Switzerland (SUPSI) is offering a full-time (100%) Ph.D. position in Machine Learning for Biosignal Processing at the Department of Innovative Technologies (DTI), located at the USI-SUPSI Campus in Lugano, within the Dalle Molle Institute for Artificial Intelligence (IDSIA). The contract is set to start on December 1st, 2024, or on an agreed-upon date.

SCOPE AND OBJECTIVES OF THE POSITION

The MyVOICE project aims to develop a Silent Speech interface based on facial muscular activity (electromyography). This technology reconstructs speech from recorded muscular activity, even in the absence of an acoustic signal, benefiting speech-disabled individuals. The research impacts speech rehabilitation and aligns with advancements in biological signal processing. The Ph.D. student will collaborate with team members in Germany and Spain, with opportunities for interaction with fellow Ph.D. students at IDSIA.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACTIVITIES

  • Develop algorithms for silent speech processing systems.
  • Assist in recording electromyographic data and live demonstrations.
  • Perform moderate teaching duties as a teaching assistant.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Master's Degree in Computer Science or related fields (completed or near completion).
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English.
  • Basic knowledge of machine learning, biosignal processing, and related fields.

WE OFFER

  • A full-time Ph.D. position initially for two years, with the possibility of a two-year extension.
  • Competitive salary in line with Swiss standards.
  • Participation in a European research project with international academic and industrial partners.
  • Access to IDSIA's workstation and instruments in a high-profile international environment.
  • Access to SUPSI student and staff facilities, including discounts and reduced rates (canteen, gymnasium, kindergarten, etc.).
