The Circular Materials Bioeconomy Network (CIMANET) is an interdisciplinary doctoral education network aimed at renewing the bio-based industry through sustainable materials and processes. Supported by Finland’s Ministry of Education and Culture, CIMANET strengthens the knowledge base for enhancing the Finnish forest and bio-based industry with innovative solutions. It includes nine universities: Aalto University, Hanken School of Economics, LUT University, Tampere University, University of Helsinki, University of Jyväskylä, University of Oulu, University of Turku, and Åbo Akademi University.
CIMANET collaborates closely with industry, research organizations, and other stakeholders to address major challenges such as resource sufficiency, clean water access, and climate change. Position I: Sustainable electronics derived from cellulose nanomaterials (Supervisors: Prof. Henrikki Liimatainen and Dr. Sami Myllymäki)
This project aims to develop sustainable electronics by replacing traditional materials like plastics and metals with renewable alternatives. Nanocellulose substrates will be used to create disposable electronic structures and devices such as antennas, sensors, reflecting surfaces, and wearables.
Specific qualifications: Experience in cellulose/soft materials and electronics is advantageous.
Position II: Sustainable tannin coagulants with tailored structural features for industrial water treatment (Supervisor: Prof. Tiina Leiviskå)
This project focuses on developing bio-based coagulants for water treatment, offering a sustainable alternative to conventional coagulants. The research will involve creating tannin-based coagulants with improved flocculation properties and tailored structural features, aiming for wider application and enhanced performance.
Specific qualifications: A background in organic chemistry is essential, with knowledge of water treatment processes and characterization techniques being beneficial.

Additionally, candidates will work within a multidisciplinary team and should possess the ability to initiate projects and collaborate with industrial and research partners.
Selected doctoral researchers will receive a three-year, full-time employment contract starting January 1st, 2025, with a six-month trial period. The starting gross salary will be approximately €2600-2800 per month, following the YPJ salary system of Finnish Universities.
