Are you passionate about the future of designing with data? Do you want to revolutionize how designers and design teams are supported in data-enabled prototyping and AI integration? Are you interested in open-source design tools and local AI?

Position: Engineering Doctorate (EngD)

Irène Curie Fellowship: No

Department(s): Industrial Design

FTE: 1.0

Date: 22/09/2024

Reference number: V51.7668

Job Description

The Department of Industrial Design at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), in collaboration with TU Delft, UTwente, and SURF, offers a fully funded 2-year EngD position for master graduates in Designing Human-System Interaction.

The Challenge

TU/e's Industrial Design department has developed Data Foundry, a platform for real-time data collection and management from remote devices. It supports qualitative data collection, participant management, and data visualization, and is increasingly used for data-driven design prototyping and AI integration. Despite supporting over 2,000 design projects, Data Foundry is currently limited to TU/e due to privacy and data sharing protocols. We aim to change this by making Data Foundry available to other design institutions.

We will open-source Data Foundry and need your help. The 'ODeDaI' project aims to enhance Data Foundry's configurability and documentation, enabling seamless integration with other universities and institutions. This will promote broader adoption, compliance with diverse data sharing policies, and open science practices within the design community.

Join a Learning Community

You will be part of a dynamic community of experts from various disciplines, including designers, researchers, engineers, education specialists, and businesses:

  • Work with the Data Foundry team and project consortium members at different institutes in the Netherlands.
  • Engage in open-source software development, run workshops in various educational contexts, and collaborate with ODeDaI project stakeholders.
  • Experience a personalized learning journey through courses, coaching, and hands-on projects.
  • Join a team of fellow EngDs and PhDs focused on data-enabled design and new tools for Industrial Design.

The EngD Position

As a designer and creative technologist, you will understand the needs and workflows of data-driven design in education and research. You will prepare the Data Foundry infrastructure for an open-source release in 2025, develop new features, create documentation, and produce educational materials. You will also engage with the community to gather user feedback.

Requirements

  • A Master's degree in Industrial Design, Creative Software Development, or a related field (degree must be obtained before September/October 2024).
  • Proficiency in full-stack software integration and user experience design.
  • Knowledge of software architecture, data modelling, and AI.
  • Attention to detail and quality.
  • Experience in writing technical documentation is a plus.

Soft Skills

  • Strong collaboration skills with multidisciplinary teams and academic stakeholders.
  • Enjoy iterative experimentation and user feedback.
  • Curiosity about data-driven design and student development in this field.
  • A can-do attitude and hands-on approach.
  • Detail-oriented with a quality mindset; software testing and release experience is a plus.

Job Requirements
