Senior Scientist – Post Doc (m/f/d)

30 hrs./week for 2 years or 40 hrs/week for 1.5 years

We seek a Post-Doctoral Researcher to conduct independent research on ethical issues related to migration policy making. The topic should align with the thematic scope of the project The Ethics of Migration Policy Dilemmas (for more information, see: https://migrationpolicycentre.eu/projects/dilemmas-project/). Candidates should submit a brief outline in their application defining the topic they wish to research and explaining how it relates to the aims of the Dilemmas project.

We particularly welcome applications from researchers who have recently completed their PhD and aim to publish articles from their dissertation work or prepare a new research proposal for external funding (e.g., the Austrian Science Fund’s ESPRIT program, the Austrian Academy of Sciences’ APART program, or the European Union’s Marie Curie program).

The successful candidate will join the research group led by Prof. Julia Mourão Permoser at the Department for Migration and Globalization and is expected to collaborate closely with other researchers within the group and the department.

The position is available starting in January 2025 or soon thereafter. It can be undertaken full-time or part-time, depending on the candidate's availability and preference. The duration varies with the number of working hours per week: 1.5 years (40 hrs/week) or 2 years (30 hrs/week).

Your tasks

  • Conduct independent academic research on ethical dilemmas of migration policy.
  • Collaborate within the framework of the “Dilemmas” project, including cooperation in preparing project publications and organizing workshops.
  • Prepare and submit a research proposal for third-party funding for a follow-up postdoctoral research project.
  • Publish research findings in international, peer-reviewed scientific journals.
  • Engage in international research collaboration.
  • Contribute to departmental affairs in research and teaching.

Your profile

Required qualifications:

  • Completed university degree (doctorate/PhD) in political sciences, economics, sociology, geography, population studies, or a related discipline.
  • Publications in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Previous experience and proven interest in migration studies (as demonstrated by PhD topic, professional background, and publications).
  • Excellent writing skills.
  • Excellent English skills (min. C1).

Desirable criteria:

  • Proven interest in and familiarity with the political theory of migration and migration ethics.
  • Experience in acquiring third-party funds.

Your perspective

  • Part-time position (30 hours/week) initially limited to 2 years or full-time position (40 hours/week) initially limited to 1.5 years, with a minimum salary of EUR 4,752.30 gross per month on a full-time basis (classification according to § 49 VwGr. B1, Kollektivvertrag für Universitäten).
