The University of Oulu is a multidisciplinary, international research university with approximately 3,600 employees dedicated to high-standard research and providing research-based education to foster a more sustainable, intelligent, and humane world. Our community comprises around 17,000 individuals. Based in northern Finland, our scientific community operates globally, creating an environment conducive to innovation.

We are currently seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher to join our Breast Cancer Genetics team in the Translational Medicine Research Unit, Faculty of Medicine and Biocenter Oulu at the University of Oulu. The Faculty of Medicine, part of the Kontinkangas Life Sciences Campus, is located adjacent to the University Hospital of Oulu, forming a unique nexus of research, education, health services, and business.

About the Job

A Postdoctoral Researcher position is available in the Breast Cancer Genetics team, led by Professor Katri Pylkäs. The team focuses on identifying genetic risk factors for breast cancer and understanding the molecular mechanisms that lead to breast cancer predisposition and malignant transformation. Utilizing large patient cohorts from the genetically isolated Northern Finnish population, the research employs advanced genomic technologies for analysis. Functional studies involve genomics, transcriptomics, gene editing, biochemical assays, and cell culture-based disease modeling.

The research will take place at the Translational Medicine Research Unit, Faculty of Medicine, where we have state-of-the-art molecular biology laboratories and instrumentation.

  • Engage in projects involving high-throughput genomics (whole-exome/genome sequencing, optical genome mapping, transcriptomics, and long-read sequencing) and population genetics.
  • Responsibilities include molecular genetics laboratory work (wet lab), data analysis (bioinformatics and statistics), and supervising laboratory activities.
  • Collaborate within a multidisciplinary research group and contribute to other group projects. Supervise doctoral researchers as part of the team.
