Postdoctoral Researcher in Analysis of Changing Hydrology and Biogeochemistry Across Arctic Pilot Sites

Postdoctoral Researcher in Analysis of Changing Hydrology and Biogeochemistry Across Arctic Pilot Sites

We are looking for a talented environmental specialist with excellent knowledge of data analysis, programming, (eco)hydrological and biogeochemical processes. You will make significant contributions to the field of hydrology and biogeochemistry by integrating long-term data sets from Arctic research sites, including Oulanka Research Station and research stations in both low- and high-arctic Greenland. This provides a rich dataset along a gradient from the boreal to the high-arctic climatic zones.

About the Job

About the Job

The primary objective of this position is to utilize the full potential of long-term data sets collected from several Arctic stations. The focus will be on cold climate hydrology and biogeochemistry, specifically the land-freshwater-atmosphere exchange of trace gases. The selected candidate will use data from recent hydrological measurements, ecosystem-atmosphere flux measurements, environmental tracers, remote sensing, and numerical modeling to explore processes, calibrate numerical models, and develop an integrated understanding. This will provide significant insights into the changing hydrological cycle in a “space for time” approach in the North and clarify how hydrology and biogeochemistry in high-latitude ecosystems respond to climate change.

The candidate is expected to strengthen the established collaboration between the University of Oulu and Aarhus University and work in a multidisciplinary and multinational research team. You will also supervise PhD and MSc researchers in collaboration with our senior staff and engage in some teaching and supervision of undergraduate students.

To succeed in the position, you are required to have:

  • Doctoral degree in water resources engineering, geosciences, mathematical or environmental science, or equivalent experience. The doctoral degree must have been received no more than 10 years ago.
  • Strong background in data analysis, including numerical and statistical methods.
  • Very good programming skills and experience with developing and maintaining large scientific codes.
  • Experience in handling large observational and/or modeling datasets.
  • Strong English language skills in both oral and written communication.
  • Demonstrated track record in scientific writing and publishing.

We also appreciate the following know-how and experience:

  • Use of various relevant field measurements in cold environments.
  • Planning and executing fieldwork campaigns.
  • Supervision of students and teaching, and applying for external funding.

What We Offer

  • An interesting and versatile position in a strong research unit focused on water and hydrological research, with opportunities for professional development alongside an experienced and enthusiastic team.
  • A regular salary paid 12 months per year, including paid leave and an additional holiday bonus in the summer.
  • Wellness benefit ePassi covering sport, culture, and well-being. Read more about other staff benefits here.
  • Our Buddy Programme and Spouse Network support you and your close ones in settling into Oulu.
  • Development and career options within a large organization.
  • We have a HR Excellence in Research quality label, a recognition awarded by the European Commission for the development of researchers’ working conditions and careers.
  • Work that matters and a workplace that promotes flexibility and work-life balance. Read more about working with us.
  • Finland is one of the most livable countries in the world, with a high quality of life, safety, excellent education system, and competitive economy. Read more about living in Oulu.

Salary

The duration of the fixed-term position is 3 years, beginning on 1st of January 2025 (or as soon as possible thereafter). A trial period of 6 months is applied in the position.

The salary will be based on the levels 5-6 of the demand level chart for teaching and research staff of Finnish universities. In addition, a salary component based on personal work performance will be paid (maximum of 50% of the job-specific component). Starting gross salary will be approximately 3600-4200 € per month (before taxes).
